Left of the Dial is this week. This week! It’s a show featuring Polaroids! There will be lots of Replacements and Husker Du and R.E.M. played in the background! I will hug you and stuff. What else do you need, really?

Srsly: Light + Glass Studio, on lovely Commerce Street, in Jackson, Miss. Singles are $50, doubles $75, triptychs $100. There’s about thirty pieces to choose from. There will be some Sandusky Reviews. There will also be candy!

This song will undoubtedly get played at some point. Is it “Left of the Dial”? Man, who cares, this is just what good stuff sounds like.

There is a secret river that runs through rock and roll. It’s the same river Elvis traveled at first—and later the Velvet Underground, Big Star, and Chronic Town-era R.E.M. It’s that burbling, hidden music that never makes the radio and your parents never like, the kind only traded on mixtapes in high school bathrooms or sold as dusty relics at Goner or Shangri-La or Little Big Store.

Oh, Fickle, Fickle Heart: Or, how Prof threatened to break up with the Hold Steady after their very first argument.

So I was thinking lately about how gorjus is going to see the Hold Steady in Memphis soon, and I was getting a little sad. (more…)

You would have totally died even if
yr liver weren’t like a screened-in porch
on a Sunday afternoon. We listened to
Tapestry in the car, doings shots of Jack
Daniels for every book you’d ever written,
even the ones that weren’t about us, and
Amy cried and said she’d cheated on you twice.
Once before the wedding and once after, but
did it count as much because it was a girl.

And it’s too late now, baby, but I’m glad
you didn’t know it rained at yr funeral, that
all yr friends got drunk and sang bubblegum
pop and the Rolling Stones, and that
I had to run out of the service and sit
in the damn bathroom because I’d started crying
when I realized they used “it’s” wrong
in the program, I swear we couldn’t have
planned it better, it was a lovely time, and
your sister gave me her phone number
after I felt her up in the parking lot.
