χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

There’s this movie an old friend liked
(he got married once in California)
it was black and white, they drank a lot
everybody talked so fast and wore hats.

The women were scary and beautiful, the
women drank martinis and they
spat puns like bullets, sarcasm tumbling
out of some sepia fountain.

I always wanted to be like that, like
those brilliant boozy detectives, an
elegant Charalambides, where
every day was a new adventure.

And yes I know that you could be
a very lonely, very frightened girl
who lives alone except for a nameless
cat, just an old tabby cat.

But maybe instead we can be like those
old movies, shimmer in the sun, be a
dream maker, a heart breaker, I’ll be your
huckleberry friend.

Come on, girl, grab my hand
we’ll solve crimes and we’ll drink
gin at noon, we’ll be legends, we’ll
break all the rules.

There’s such a lot of world to see.
Put on your hat, slide that gun
into your garter, and wrap
your wits about you.

The game is afoot, the game is afoot, the game is afoot.

For this new wonderful little thing, may she wreak her own legend.

Philemon knew that grace was afoot when Onesimus scattered and then returned. “Holy Cow!” he said. “This Grace is a new game altogether. And peace.”

This is awesome! Belated congratulations, if I’m putting the pieces together correctly. Thanks for the poem; how do you feel about it being reposted (with full credit of course)?
