Dawn Snow in the Delta.

I suspect there is nothing better in this world then waking up at the Shack-Up Inn at dawn, a beautiful woman at your side, and last night’s whiskey still gently crashing around in your skull, little sparks of lightning in the distance. Then to open the door and look out upon the Delta, and for snow to brush against your cheeks, to flutter onto your eyelids: then to walk a few feet through the snow, and huddle with the men as the women sleep, split a fresh pot of coffee and throw a few slugs of Maker’s in it, and talk yourself awake, talk yourself into a new day, talk yourself into a new year.

There is a glory that appears, childlike and lovely, when it snows where it doesn’t: it makes all that could be seem possible, all that isn’t seem real, a faerie-world come to life.

From our annual February trip to the Shack Up Inn. See our last trip in 2008, when we first stayed at the Robt. Clay shack.

This is about 3 miles from granddaddy Pollan’s house in Lurand. I did a lot of my growing up around there.

I remember exactly one snow in the Mississippi Delta when I was growing up. It may have snowed more, but I don’t remember. It was in probably 1953. It snowed in Alligator, maybe a half inch or so. Unfortunately I was visiting my grandparents in Hollandale, so missed most of it, though I saw a few tatters when I returned.

It was magical. Have loved snow ever since.
