The Oaks of Audubon.

The increasing scarcity and expense of Polaroid film has put a damper on my spirits lately. Okay, let’s be honest—it was always somewhat touch-and-go to find, and pricey; but it’s getting worse (couldn’t even score some at a Wal-Mart the other day, normally a reliable source). As a result, I’m growing ever more hesitant to mash the button.

Hesitant might not be the right word; selective, then. It is true that I wandered around Audubon Park with Lula for a good ten minutes before even drawing my camera out, but perhaps that is as much age as caution. There’s some selection process as well; after working with Polaroids steadily for four years, you begin to learn what works and what doesn’t.

So the real question is: why is Spanish moss so awesome? It’s just a fungus, right? So why do I want to stuff it in my pocket and drape it over my house?

As I mentioned last week, we stayed at the elegant Terrell House, on Magazine. Jaysus has recently been scouring the preservation blogs regarding New Orleans (try Preservation Nation), hailing the return of Middendorf’s (it looked wide-open and healthy when we drove back a couple Sundays back) and the ongoing and senseless demolition of the exquisite architecture of the Crescent City.

The Gambit Weekly (likely the only alternative newspaper I know of that has inspired a comic book character—I doubt the Avengers are about to welcome Free Press Lass anytime soon) recently highlighted a video that will remind you why you love New Orleans. If you haven’t been there lately, jump in the car and head down right now. You’ll be happy you did.

I hate to be “that guy”, but spanish moss is actually a flower in the same family as pineapples… (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_moss)

Grizz, no, that’s awesome! I didn’t know that—and it kind of makes me love it even more knowing that!
