“What Do I Play To Make the World Come Back?” (Good-bye, Steve Gerber).

faked by Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

The writer Steve Gerber passed away this week. In addition to being a tireless advocate for creator’s rights, he happened to write one comic that has withstood not only the test of time, but also critical examination and philosophical dissection.

I’m speaking of Marvel Two-In-One #7, a comic joyfully entitled “Name That Doom!” Roughly 31 years later the comics philosopher Jim Roeg would write a grand examination of it entitled On Existentialism: Why Paper Dolls Do(n’t) Cry, or Steve Gerber’s Myth of Sisyphus. This, in turn, inspired me to create my latter-day illustration of Mr. Gerber’s words, in “Paper Dolls Don’t Cry.”

I still have a xerox of that panel hanging over my desk. Thanks to Steve for writing it all those years ago.

  1. Very sorry to hear this. The great work he inspired you and Jim to do is further evidence of the greatness of his own work.
