Good point, Don—I’d forgotten all about that. The Jurgens era isn’t one that I revisit very often or remember very well, I have to say. (Oy, Protocide—worst Cap villain ever?) I’ve liked Jurgens on other things, but his Cap wasn’t his best work.

Great post. I’m a big fan of the Gru. He’s dearly missed.

Only inaccuracy that I’m surprised no one caught yet: #443 wasn’t the last time Cap died. That would be The end of the Jurgens series, #50. They even closed out the series with a big funeral issue that everyone attended.

Don’t remember it? Apparently, neither did Marvel. When the next (Marvel Knights) series started, Cap was alive and well again. No explanation. Not even a passing reference.

Just a quick note to say this is a fantastically well-written piece. Gru was my favorite Cap writer, hands down, and I have no doubt the campiness (Cap Wolf?!?) was absolutely intentional. His Quasar run is also entertaining, but for entirely different reasons.

So, within the Marvel Universe, who licensed The Punisher to be a comic book? Are they sending Frank Castle his likeness-rights checks, or is he gonna visit them and punish them for some form of copyright violation or other?

Political or theological. Will C. America be resurrected in a Messianic plan for the redemption of ??? who is that? Bones—certainly a symbol of death to be overcome and the Reagan snake. Hm.m.m have we ever needed redemption more?

Perhaps I’m taking this a little too far.

I love that in the midst of fighting evil and getting shot at, Captain America still addresses the president as Mr. President. So awesome.

You have to admire the realism though: if Reagan had ever actually turned into a snake, he certainly would have kept his underwear on.

Thanks, Dip. I actually really like David Boring, btw. And the GI Joe comics were a huge obsession for me growing up; I haven’t re-read them recently (and I’m not sure how many of them I even still have), but my sense is that they’re better than any toy tie-in comic has any right to be.

wow, fury. that was awesome. to think, the last comic I read was David Boring, and I could have been reading, well, comics.

I was also totally the kid wayyyyyyy into Punisher and Wolverine. GI Joe before that.

Sometimes I realize I suck in ways I never would have imagined.
