Light + Glass (Jackson, Miss.).

faked by Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

My Polaroids are often about attempting to capture the nuances of a particular time, place, or object (such as the feeling of a warm, blurry New Year’s, or that great old Bonneville). Instead of using light to highlight or obscure a subject, I have been attempting to capture those early-morning times light can feel so concrete.

A popular piece of Sherer glass snuck into the first frame but I didn’t do it justice. It’s an open secret that Commerce Street in Jackson is about to detonate: various groups are spending in excess of $200 million dollars to resculpt the area known for Hal & Mal’s, Martin’s, and of course, W.C. Don’s. Light + Glass Studio is a vital piece of the puzzle. An art gallery and functioning photography studio and glassworks, L + G is located right in the heart of the development. It’s also run by two of my favorite artists in the South.

Now if we can only get them to open it before the St. Paddy’s Day Parade! (Or, as I’m going to give in and start calling it, Sweet Potato Queens Day). L + G is in its final stages of renovation (converting a semi-abandoned downtown warehouse into a gallery is, as you might imagine, a bit of work).
