I’m often at parties, parties where there are a lot of girls who want to make out with me, and I am inevitably asked this question: “dude, how hot is Professor Fury in real life?”
And the answer is “Rowdy Roddy Piper hot.”
One of the things I do as I “work” all day is mindlessly click through the PrettyFakes Archives De-Luxe, and because I cannot stand the sight of anything I have ever drawn, photographed, or written more than 24 hours before, my focus is invariably on the prose stylings of Professor “Prof.” Fury, my comrade in arms.
Today, in a narcissistic twist upon the end-of-the-year lists which will soon be foisted upon us in all media, I present . . . The Essential Professor Fury: 2006 Edition, ed. Gorjus. A veritable chitlin’ bucket of pure, unadulterated awexxome!! Um, seriously. It isn’t be a secret that Prof. is someone whose work brings me constant enjoyment, and my respect for him is immense; I am proud to call him my friend, and not just because of the truly cool Springsteen bootlegs he sends me, or that fact that Contessa makes a mean mimosa.
And so, without further ado, my favorites for the year of 2006:
1. Complicity, History, and Captain America #292
In which Fury culls the origins of his progressive beliefs from the cherished comic books of his childhood.
2. Pretty Fakes Book Club: Jujitsu for Christ by Jack Butler
Where our main man describes the whys and wherefores of our beloved author, Jack Butler, and his masterwork Jujitsu for Christ.
3. Signs and Signals
The Prof. on Psalty and “fundagelical un-reading.”
4. Ruins and Revelations
Wherein Our Hero witnesses Bruce Springsteen in full Seeger-glory at a resurrected New Orleans Jazzfest.
5. There Will Always Be An Ambush Bug
In what is likely the most popular PrettyFakes post evar (seriously—like, 87% of our traffic is directed to this post), Fury perfectly captures the joy and whimsy of Ambush Bug.
6. A Pretty Fakes PSA: Protecting Your Home and Family from Don Henley Attack
This . . . this is pretty much what it sounds like. Drew ire from the Eagles fans out there on the internets.
7. NEVER FORGET
The Prof. broke our hearts—and our eyes—with tales of a zombie Lee Greenwood.
8. “America is a piece of trash!”
And 2006 is made whole, as one of Fury’s first (and best) posts of the year, regarding Captain America and spirit of liberalism, is renewed and rexamined.
Feel free to disagree! Or, praise my almost inhuman powers of wit and observation!
Whoa! Thanks, gorj—what a swell thing to do! I’ve never been the subject of a list before, year-end or otherwise.
Even if it is totally a naked ploy to get me to post more regularly. Man, now the odds and ends post that I planned to vomit forth this evening is going to look really sucky.
And don’t forget, there would never have been a “History, Complicity, and Captain America #292” without your Animal Man post.
Nice list. Though I’m partial to that Cortez Del Mar review from back in the day for some strange reason…
Hope all is well.
