Reg! I bought and loved Whitmore's Hymns for the Hopeless--the second half, in particular, is really great. But I love it as an album instead of track-by-track, and so it sort of fell between the cracks. And yeah, this is a fairly homogeneous list in terms of genre, which is one reason I abandoned the usual "best of" format for these things--internal-noggin repetitions is the only criterion here. (Well, I've excluded annoying jingles and what-not, which I guess is breaking my own rules, but then, they're my own rules...)

But I do wanna hear about "Back Home in Sulphur Springs"--the Smog, SLGTM, and Cliff Gober tracks all came out a while back, too--it's just that this is the year they got stuck in my head.

The only new records I bought that were actually new this year were by Bruce Springsteen, William Elliott Whitmore, Bruce Molsky, and Norman Blake. I was going to write eloquently about how one track from the new version (another of the same title was recorded 25 years ago) of Back Home in Sulphur Springs, "All the Good Times Are Past and Gone", has been bouncing around my head most of the year. It turns out, upon checking, that that track is to be found on Blake's cd release from 2004, the Morning Glory Ramblers. All this is to say that all of these indie-rock (am I mistaken?) tracks are slightly outside of my bailiwick. But has anyone else had the positive reaction to William Elliott Whitmore (it's not exactly rock, but it's on an indie-rock label) that I've had? Has anyone heard him? Did anyone notice that both Bizarro and Seamonsters, two GREAT Wedding Present albums, were finally re-released after years of being out-of-print, and sound, to my ear, every bit as earth-shattering as they did in the early nineties. I feel a little hopelessly-out-of-touch. Should I give up and just go buy a cardigan?

This is a good list. You already know how I feel about the new Hold Steady. Unlike you and gorjus, I think the whole album holds together pretty well. I couldn't choose a favorite.

My stuck-on-repeat list would include:

"Funeral" - Band Of Horses. (My song of the year. "St. Augustine" is a runner-up.)

"Been Here Before" - Jeremy Enigk (formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate. This song is stunning.)

"Wet and Rusting" - Menomena. (Good clean fun.)

"The Wait" - Built To Spill

"Everyone Choose Sides" - The Wrens

"Gideon" - My Morning Jacket (Why, oh why, did I not go see them live?). Added to the "Please play this at my funeral" playlist.

The entire new Muse album, Black Holes and Revelations. I have cooked the voice coil on 2 sets of speakers with this one. "Knights of Cydonia" and "Invincible" are just killer.

"Gunshy" by The Antiques (go listen: www.myspace.com/theantiques)

...and finally, "Johnny and June" was in heavy rotation for quite a while. Thanks for that, Prof!

I haven't heard of a lot of this music but it was damn fine reading about it. As far as "You Can Make Him Like You": I think it's a feminist paen of encouragment. Well, certainly post-post-fem, since "you can let your boyfriend deal with the dealers" implies a ruby-lipsticked heroine.

I must remind you that this song will be performed roughly 40 hours from right now, only sixty milesish from your home. And all of your friends will be there, hurtling through the New Orleans darkness. How, oh how, can you miss that??

I confess I've never heard (of) most of this, but I'm with you on the Kanye - every song he's put out so far is the shiz, and "Gone" is just radicchio.

Most of my music buying this year consisted of playing catch up, so the songs stuck in my head tended to be oldies, like Bowie's "Five Years" and Black Sabbath's "Fairies Wear Boots." alec eiffel turned me on to The Darkness, and I still carry their whole first album (Permission to Land) around in my head, especially "Black Shuck." Also: Jocelyn Pook's "Masked Ball," which is the scary-as-a-mofo song playing during the creepy-as-a-mofo masquerade scene in Eyes Wide Shut; Fountains of Wayne's version of "...Baby One More Time"; and Kanye/Jay-Z's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone."

I'm officially a Gossip fan. Once the song started, my head got wobbly and my hips got shaky. And these are good signs.

I agree with you on Neko. Seriously. Girl's got pipes and if you don't get it you must have committed some unforgivable sin and are being punished for it. And "European Oils". If Dan Bejar doesn't thrill you, re-examine your past. You did something wrong.

My list includes "Emily" by Joanna Newsom. And Hot Chip's "Over and Over," for something to dance to after 11 minutes of harp.

Right on, D! For my money, Knock Knock and A River... are the Smog albums most worthwhile as albums; I'd recommend iTunesing your way through the rest of the Smog catalog (and be sure to grab "Our Anniversary" and "Truth Serum" from Supper...)

I'm also nuts for "Salvador Sanchez" on that Sun Kil Moon album. I'd be interested to hear (here or at LP) your thoughts on "Fox Confessor," which is one of the few songs on that album that I tend to lose my patience with...

First, it's about damn time you recognized the greatness of Sun Kil Moon. Mark Kozelek just released a live album, Little Drummer Boy, that includes a version of "Glenn Tipton" that is both slower and faster than the original -- mostly faster; the rhythm fluctuates at Kozelek's whim -- and I think I like it even better.

Second, after downloading "Dress Sexy at My Funeral" from some mp3 blog, I'm a total Smog convert. For the last two weeks, "Easily Led" (also from Dongs of Sevotion) has been rattling in my brain almost constantly.

Third, if "John Saw that Number" isn't my favorite song of the year, it's only because I think I like "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" just a little bit better.
