Took this the night of October 7th at the Nick—the “OUS” on the sign is the Sid Vicious Experience, who I never saw do anything but tune up. I also missed Troubled Minds, but the Chess Club were great fun—”pop noir” as they call themselves. They’re also apparently playing in Jackson next week at a bar I’ve never heard of, which is statistically and logically impossible.
I’ve never seen the great shows some of my pals have at the Nick—legendary Guided By Voices marathons soaked in Budweiser and whiskey—but around 2000 I saw the Woggles and the Fleshtones and literally danced until my feet were sore.
But this night we just played pool and pinball and then bailed when it started getting time for the Overnight Lows to play—how did I know, you ask? I felt it in my bones. The L.O.W.S. owned the cavernous depths of the Upsidedown Plaza, and I knew the show was making an impact on the locals when I was jumping up and down and a tiny brown-haired girl pushed me, apparently attempting to start some sort of a “pit.”
I do not do the slam dancings, not at this advanced age, but that push was worth one million rock and roll dollars.
Glad to see The Fleshtones get props whnever and wherever. Hexbreaker was a seminal slab of vinyl in my youth.
Someone in our party stole some beer out of Guided by Voices’s cooler onstage after the show. Trivia: I still have the bottle.
However, Vendela—aka Hardcore—took swigs out of the band’s bottle of Jack Daniels during the show when they played at the Chukker. So, officially, she wins.
Looks like you Jackson rockers are getting some good shows in the next few months…Cary Hudson 11/4 (Hal and Mals); Mofro 11/16 (Hal and Mals); Taylor Grocery Band (or, as I call them, the South Mississippi All Stars) 11/22 and New Years Eve (martins); and the ever-rockin’ Lucero 12/16 (Hal and Mals). Local Lexington KY faves The Scourge of the Sea are also supposedly headed your way, but I can’t recall the date or venue offhand…Maybe it’s the bar that Gorjus doesn’t know about???
Have fun.

Re: GBV beer was that the ice storm show? Plus Vendela also once got a Pollard body signature in “lipstick” if memory serves—Barrister’s a long, long time ago in a galaxy far far . . .
Herman,
Yes, the Terror of the Sea is a good band…But they are from Baton Rouge (my former stomping grounds) and different from The Scourge of the Sea (www.thescourageofthesea.com) who are from Lexington and are playing at WC Don’s on Jan 4.
Maybe they should tour together?
Bob Pollard’s liver thanks whoever stole that bottle of beer. This is a war of increments.
