So, I know at least a few of you would like a recap of the inevitable insanity that we encountered on our very brief visit to my folks’ place for my niece’s birthday (say like this one). Here’s the deal, though: within hours of our arrival, we witnessed my brother wash his daughter’s face with a Pledge furniture wipe.

Everything afterward seemed downright functional by comparison.

RIGHT BEFORE the United States of America invaded Occupied France there was a man from Nowhere, Alabama who got married to a beautiful woman, also from Nowhere. He was a coal miner, but then he enlisted in the Army. She was a junior in high school.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (A Rankin County Foto-Revue).

Sundays I sometimes drive to Rankin County. There’s this one old strip right off Commerce, what I think of as the back way, that takes you by the old places that shut down once Pearl and Madison became places people actually wanted to get to, and once the highways and the big boxes finally killed the last of the family shops.

Yesterday the New York Court of Appeals, the highest appellate court in that state, rejected the arguments of forty-four same-sex couples that their state’s constitution required the recognition of same-sex marriage.
