Johns Road, Bessemer, Alabama (“Rusted Robin’s Eggs”).

I’ve been wanting to take some photos of this field filled with broken boats and mobile homes for quite a while, and finally got my change the other night. The smell and the bugs ended up running me off, but not before I churned through a couple packs of film. Not too many turned out well; these are the best, which isn’t saying too much.

I have to say that the best thing I’ve read since “The Ballad of Frank Melton,” by the inestimable Satsuma Man, is his new short play “Richard Wright and Eudora Welty,” in which the title characters talk, drink beer, and watch the 2006 World Cup with Jaysus and Frank Melton. It’s the greatest thing of all time, and the voices and mannerisms of the characters are so dead on that I keep reading it over and over. I have favorite parts of this thing, and it’s just a few hours old. Go read it already!!

I really like you’re linking the acqua(marine) color not only to robin’s eggs but also to those famed Tiffany’s boxes. Time for a little “Moon River.”

  2. V. cool. I love that the color of the sky matches the boats so closely. And I love me some rusting junk!

  3. neola says:

i felt heartbroken seeing those boats. ruination day, indeed.

I’m glad you did this. I’ve been wanting to take these shots for a while now, too, but just never made the time. The smell is likely from the dog food processing plant less than a mile away.

That and the dead things hiding in there.

You know why all of these are in this sorta field, don’t you?

  5. sally says:

Well, I don’t know why they’re in this field. Tell us!

  6. pinky says:

It’s leftover from an F5 tornado that tore up the place like, six or seven years ago. There are still places where cars and sheet metal are imbedded in trees.

  7. gorjus says:

Well, but these are arranged here; they might be dumped, surely, but the boats are set out side-by-side, and have been stripped of instrument panels, steering wheels, and seats.

  8. pinky says:

They got stripped later, but, ironically, that’s how they got arranged by nature. Odd, huh? They’ve been like that for years.

    Nice haiku.

(Is the plural for haiku “haikus” or simply “haiku?”)

  10. Sue says:

I love these pictures. The colors are beautiful. And the backstory on the tornado makes the whole thing even better.

  11. gorjus says:

Also: the smell, it comes from a nearby dog-food plant.
