Special Offer–Now Only!!

faked by Monday, April 3rd, 2006

This is a selection of things one could purchase via the advertisers in an issue of Marvel Team-Up from 1973 and a reprint issue of Peacemaker from 1977. More, arguably wholly worthless, information l8r!

  1. Woo! I can almost smell the yellowing newsprint. I always wanted that shark’s tooth pendant they used to advertise, myself. And once I sent off for a “Captain O” sales kit, which I received, and which I sold absolutely nothing from. That punching fist is great.

My cousins once tried to get some of that pile of treasures by selling Grit magazine. And it went about as well as you might expect in an extremely small southern Mississippi town. They sold maybe three to parents and grandparents and earned enough between them for “nada.”

I never went for all that, but I did get a set of those Chiquita Banana™ walkie-talkies! They were awesome. And they had, of course, a Morse Code alphabet printed out on the back…should I ever be lost in a mineshaft…unable to speak due to my severe injuries…only able to use my one good finger…to tap out a message in Morse Code on my huge banana shaped walkie-talkie…praying that whoever had the other one a) had the thing turned on and b) were within 50 feet of the mine shaft…and if they were why didn’t they hear my horrrible accident and already go get some help. Seriously what are they just standing around for?! Didn’t they hear my screams as I was crushed by that huge boulder? Thank God my walkie talkie was in the one hand that didn’t get smashed!

Thank God my walkie talkie was in the one hand that didn’t get smashed! “deet deeeeet” Now “deet deet d-d-deet” go get “deet deeeeet d-deet” help, “deet d-d-deet deeeeet” jerk!!

haw haw haw. man, those ads are usually the thing i love most about old comics! sometimes i’m more than a little surprised at the prices on that stuff. i have a comic late 70s/early 80s with and ad for real diamond, etc rings. they ran from $200-1500! who the hell, reading a comic (a kid or not) is spending $1500 on a ring (in 1979) they found in a comic book?

    Not I says Mr. Mooch!

I can’t remember which ads came from what year, but my inflation calculator tells me that the A.M. Radio—$4 in 1977—would be $12.98 in 2005. The Destructive Power Punch would be $9.73, and the Skateboard Charm is $6.49. The Rome Ballet “iced cologne” (ICKO) “Gift of Glamour” (I misspelled it on the cartoon! It’s much better with the Euro “u”) would be $19.47.

All those prices seem about right, although not cheap by any means.

  6. Mr. Mooch says:

man, can you believe the number of celebrities making comic book ad appearances in a pair of dingo boots? i was thinking about good ole dingo the other day when i was buying a new belt for my new buckle!

  7. herman rarebell says:

thanks to whoever added the hott link to my dingos.
now bring me the head of twinkie the kid!
