Indeed! My brother collected A & WCA back in the day, and this was one of my most fondly remembered story lines from my childhood. I do wish it was collected in TPB form as well, as I've recently started going back and buying a lot of TPB's, esp. the Essential line.

I've been reading comics for as long as I care to remember and I have to say that this storyline by Steve Englehart is one of the best. It ranks up there with the sprawling, messy and very wildly plotted Batman arc that Gerry Conway did in Batman 339-356 and Detective Comics 503-520, starring Hugo Strange and "Boss" Thorne.

It's those sprawly, non-message driven stories that have been replaced by things like Countdown at D.C. and Civil War and it's many, many, many offshoots at Marvel.

I miss those old stories.

I collected WCA from the beginning, and stopped in about '91 or so when I took a break from comics just in time to miss the very missable era of comic books in the 1990's. Jealous of all the action I'd missed in the 70's, I loved the idea of collecting a team book from its beginning. But I can remember even as a teen having doubts about the book. Looking back, I can appreciate the art and the story a lot more now. That's probably because I have grown much less sophisticated and worldly than I was as a teenaged stoner, ditching class to smoke weed and buy comics. But I have always really liked the genius of the WCA Lost in Space-Time saga, especially when things that the characters do in the past and distant past survive into the present day (Moon Knight's weapons, Firebird's Bible, etc.). I really want to go back and read some of those back issues, but apparently my old comic collection has gotten lost in a space-time warp.

Cactus looks like green dough rolled in whiskers. And I love the instantaneous regrowth on the arm...it just pops out of nothing. Amazing. And those rounded-Care-Bear-like fingers just kill me.

WCA always had a B-team feel, but still was able to make for good stories that seemed to matter. Like Alpha Flight, except worth a damn. There are still plenty of those "great stories" that I have not and probably will not read. Especially since I am completely disconnected from both the current Marvel and DC universes.

I can't believe I didn't know the name of the great Orz off the top of my head. He as much defined X-Men as Claremont's hammy-deliciousness!

While Butte and Gila were pretty lame--and Cactus was ridiculous--I always liked Sunstroke's name and costume (coff coff, dork).

Lettering was by Tom Orzechowski. And it is indeed good. You know whose name I miss seeing in comics? Letterer John Costanza.

Yeah, the thing with The Thing was weird. Englehart was writing FF about this time, too, but I don't know exactly how much his stints on those titles overlapped. Those FF stories were well intentioned, in a let's-shake-up-the-status-quo sort of way, but didn't really come off so great--though Englehart has argued that, as you suggest, he was getting all kinds of direction from editorial (and even published his last FF stories under a pseudonym).

Mooch, how's construction going on the Omniversal Muffinex?

This is right around when I left. I liked the art, and I adore the lettering--who did it? I can't remember.

But the continual will-he won't-he with the Thing and the semi-bizarre Firebird subplots (which never did seem to resolve) made me think, even at my relatively young age, that there was some editorial heavy-handedness going on. The Mockingbird subplots creeped me out a bit, too.

The Whackos were best because they had barbecues! And yearly baseball games with their sister team! And, you're right about Englehart juggling the time periods--v. v. cool.

you said "bent on world domination" above, and i can't help but notice that it is rare that someone is 'bent' on anything else. which is a shame. currently i'm bent on blueberry muffin eating, but like Dominus, i will be thwarted.
