“Diamonds,” by Kathryn Stripling Byer.

faked by Sunday, December 11th, 2005

This, he said, giving the hickory leaf
to me. Because I am poor.
And he lifted my hand to his lips,
kissed the fingers that might have worn
gold rings if he had inherited

bottomland, not this
impossible rock where the eagles soared
after the long rains were over. He stood
in the wet grass, his open hands empty,
his pockets turned inside out.

Queen of the Meadow, he teased me
and bowed like a gentleman.
I licked the diamonds off the green
tongue of the leaf, wanting only
that he fill his hands with my hair.

wow! this is great! i’ll have to add this to the collection. this is also one of my fav poems. love, love, love the bits of sequins scattered amongst the leaves, perfect physical transformation of the poem.

it’d have been MUCH better if you’d used actual leaves or berries. Those are CLEARLY fakes! what about that part on the left? it looks like a limb off a fake xmas tree!

  4. Beautiful work, gorjus.

Really makes me long for a girl who, in response to getting a leaf, wants me to fill my hands with her hair (as opposed to, um, go directly to Bromberg’s).

  5. KoE says:

    Man. This is incredible!

  6. Wonderful…magic is afoot!
    I love it.

Thank you to all these great responses. This is an old poem. Almost as old as I am! I’m glad to know it still resonates.
