I sort of forgot about the Decemberists when I was making this list, which I guess means I shouldn’t have put them on here anyway, but I did like Picaresque quote a bit, though I don’t find myself revisiting it very often, except for “On the Bus Mall,” which just breaks my heart.

I should have posted this ages ago, but I thought I should mention that I have picked up 4 out of 5 of these on your say-so (haven’t gotten Smog yet), and am wicked glad that I did so. Also, I second Scott’s Decemberists recommendation.

The Sufjan Stevens album is my #1 this year, too. It’s simply breathtaking, both in scope and execution.

Twin Cinema is probably the Pornographers’ best album to date, though I always wish Neko had more than two vocal leads per album. “Falling Through Your Clothes” plays with my mind each time I hear it.

I haven’t heard it yet! (The secret of my top-five list is that it usually consists of the only five of the year’s releases that I actually bought, and the secret of its timing is that it usually appears when I have no other content to post). I need to get it, though, and for sure, because I hear good things. How do you like it?

And I still haven’t made it to get the Silver Jews record, and now I see that Bonnie Prince Billy has a noisy and sloppy live album out. Must. Resist. Or, maybe I won’t.

prof: nail on head. still haven’t succumbed to the smog, though. i don’t know why, but i can’t make myself care enough to.
and don’t tell anyone, but i haven’t bought the sufjan yet!

still – the other three are def in my top ten.
it’s still early, though.

I feel a bit guilty—or behind-the-times—as I haven’t yet listened to any of those! But, query: did you ever listen to pre-New Porn band Zumpano? They were on Sub Pop in the 90’s and made some good stuff.
