Sally Mann, “Gorjus” (1989) (gelatin silver print).

faked by Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

Because apparently neither I nor Professor Fury are fully recovered from Bungalow Bash 2005, The Thirtieth, I’m again revealing my secret identity: I’m not an artist boy, but actually a sublimely detailed silver gelatin print from 1989, captured and delineated by the American photography icon Sally Mann.

Sorry if this disappoints anybody. Seriously, though: this is so wonderful that I named myself after it. (My old name was a little ridiculous, anyway). Polaroids and haikus are on the way, though!

The image “Gorjus” is under the sole copyright of Sally Mann.

you were a lot more fun then.

  5. gorjus says:

Uh, Pinky, howsabout you DON’T print it out?? Um. Since, you know, it’s not mine. Uh, and don’t sell it, either!!

You know, I had sort of forgotten that I was called XJ-9, too! That’s mainly my robot name and my dj name, and I’m rarely either, now. But no, “Ember” is the name I sort of blush at.

In 1993 Big Gray & I made a flier for a band—simple machine. I had never made one before, but I immediately fell in love with the interplay between necessary words (Mulligan’s, Friday) and image.

At the time, Trent Reznor was sequentially numbering Nine Inch Nails projects—Halo 5, Halo 6, &tc. I loved that. So, we named ourselves, and began numbering.

After a while, BG wasn’t as active with it, and I just did them by myself. At least a few were just him, though. This is similar to mine & Jaxxie’s arrangement, where we’ve worked pretty closely on a few “GorjusGlam” posters, but some are just her and I did some on my own, too.

“Ember” is just the name of a kid. I carried it around for years, until at least 1999 or so. I got my numbers mixed after around thirty or forty, dropped them for a while, and then guesstimated myself up into the low 70’s, I think. I’m not sure what happened to trigger the change, but all my early bound sketchbooks and journals carry that name.

I love some of those fliers. I wish I had more copies of them. One of my favorites was the Starkstockapalooza, with the little run down on all the bands. That kicked butt. Do you remember the “Manos Bands of Fate” thing we did for all the Freshmen telling them who the bands were in town? That thing was soooooo extensive.

as I recall, XJ-9’s full name was Super Robot DJ XJ-9. Maybe it was a bit long and would be hard to page in restaurants and airports, but I liked it anyway.

  12. pinky says:

I have a pair of jeans that i stole from gorjus that have some stars and the letters”XJ-9” stamped into them.

HAHA on you…. if you’ve been looking for them!

  13. gorjus says:

I forgot about those!! Um, as much as I’d love to wear them—I SERIOUSLY doubt they’d fit!

I kind of forgot that was my name for a while. And Doc, I had forgotten that “Manos” booklet until you brought it up! I’m sure I have a copy, somewheres. Do you have one?

My long term goal is to sequentially add in all Ember/Gorjus flizzers. My worry? That the box they’re in, storaged somewhere in West Birmingham, is wrecked up. I mite have some nitemares about that, on occasions.

I thought XJ-9 was more like his man about town alter ego. Sorta Like Mr. Mooch was this cat I knew at Tulane Law who worked really hard studying and such.

oh yeah! i thought you told me ‘ember’ was a ‘The Spark’ reference (he says shuffling through a few copies of Vol. 2, Issue 1 by his desk).
