This Saturday night!! I’ll be drunk up in the woods of North Mississippi, but check it out—it should be great. Eric Stracener will be a ton of fun (he’s promising to do a Tom Waits cover), and while I’ve only heard Steve Deaton, of Buffalo Nickel, once or twice in a band setting, this should be a real treat (but not as much a treat as reading his page and finding out that, like Sam and Professor Fury and myself, his exposure to music at an early age seemed limited that of the Christian variety).
Yeah, it ain’t high art, but I was in a hurry. Methodology: I resorted to the time-honored “tear up a cassette tape” formula; in this case, the victim was a heat-warped dub of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, with their previous self-titled record on the flipside, both a bit fuzzy from the LPs I recorded them from (generously gifted to me by Zander & Laurel for housesitting on the Southside waaaay back in 2000) (and with “Gold Dust Woman” skipping until the cassette ran out). The sticker on the cassette is entitled Sockeye in honor of Eric’s first record).
The lettering took the longest time; they’re from this Helvetica set of rub-on transfers which are so much fun to do, but time-consuming. That’s where the slight uneneveness and the “cracked” look comes from—it’s the lettering actually peeling off from the paper, or fragmenting. I did some other sets after I wadded up the paper and really distressed the lettering, but eh, this was busy enough.
The most fun is playing around with the spooled-out tape and all the different ways it can look. These are two of the better ones:

looks great.
i need some flyas for some upcoming shows at don’s. you’ve passed muster. let’s get to work.
These are swell! I get a kind of amiable ransom note vibe from the strangled cassettes.
that’s pretty awesome. oh, and thanks for lending me your clip art.
