Often my cartoons are very text-heavy in the planning stages; what’s hard is to say what you mean in just a few panels, without too much text. Here’s the original script for this cartoon, which differs significantly from the published version:
THEE CATOPTRIC ENDORSEMENT
panel one:
sideview ordering food.
. . . and one with beans instead of beef. Hi there. No, Catoptric isn’t endorsing Taco Bell, although it’s a great choice for me, because I’m a vegetarian. You can get a lot of different stuff on the cheap without meat.
panel two:
looking at camera
No, we here at Catoptric wanted to talk to you about the election. I’m not going to innudate you with facts or ideology: both are important, but there’s something more critical to me.
panel three:
image of Superman
Myth.
panel four:
turning back to lady
Thanks. Yeah, you have a good day, too. Maybe you wouldn’t think a 29-year old lawyer would still care about a sense of moral right and wrong that unabashedly came from comic books. But it?s the most important thing in the world to me, and jp! put it best when he called me drunk late one night, right after Abu Ghraib.
panel five:
picture of cell phone in the darkness
(in quotes) Gorj. The stuff they?re saying . . . if it’s true, it means that we?re the bad guys. It means that we’re . . . we’re not who we’re supposed to be.
panel six:
picture of Manhatten with dotted lines to represent Twin Towers
What he was saying was that the America we believe in, the one in our hopes and our myths,is not the one we live in. Our America, which seemed to crystallize so briefly after that damned day in September, has gone away.
panel seven:
looking at camera
But my friends, my family, you can make it right again. You have a say in what happens. Use it. I implore you in the name of all that I hold sacred, in the very name of Jesus the Christ, whom I believe was murdered and then rose again to save our souls, you must vote for Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts for President of these United States.
panel eight
My colleagues do not necessarily share my religious beliefs, nor my invocation of such. Yet we do share a desire to have a new president. We want the America of our hearts back. A vote for Kerry/Edwards isn’t just for a better economy, or a plan out of Iraq. It’s a vote for hope.
panel nine
And for you here in Jackson or Mississippi, please vote for Justice James E. Graves, Jr., for Supreme Court. He’s a good man and a good judge. Don’t forget to vote for the new Capital Center Convention Center, either—700 new jobs is something we need.
Thank-you for your time and consideration. God bless America, and God save Mississippi.
Lovely, lovely stuff, gorjus, and right on time, too, now that the Clarion-Ledger has endorsed Bush, Inc. for president. Dammit.
damn liberal media.
Gorj what’s the word on Carlson for the Supremes?
He’s running really stoopid ads about announcing South Panola Football games but i thought he was supposedly a good liberal judge.
I got into a huge discussion about the elections with my probationers. I shocked one guy when I responded to his questions about me being a Bush fan—-” Just because I’m white, doesn’t mean that I’m Bush fan.”
So, out of the 82 active cases that I have, minus the rednecks, the idiots, and the invalid, I have at least 60 percent going to the polls tomorrow to vote for Kerry. I told them I would drive if they couldn’t find a way.
I agree with my big brother, it’s time for a change and a move in the right direction. A time when we can heal our nation and give purpose back to our soldiers, and perhaps answers to their families. This is the time we are to embark on a new mission, together as a nation working for our tomorrows.
Vote it up Gorjus babies, vote it up.
Do Republican organizations provide rides to the polls? Our county Dems organization is very vocal about giving rides to anyone who needs one, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the GOP doing so (no surprise, certainly).
KoE, don’t jump to conclusions. I did hear that the GOP is offering free kicks in the shins to people standing in line at the polls, especially to those who are wearing Kerry/Edwards pins or who happen to be African-American.
Y’all, I made fun of jp! for shamelessly plugging his site a few weeks ago, but he’s compiled a mighty list of the trickery and lies that the GOP is using to confuse and mislead the voting public. It’s shameful. More than that, it makes me want to vomit:

luvs to you
Democrats can do no wrong! Every Repuglican sucks ass! Now what was that saying about generalizations…..
Replace evil with evil. Then rejoice.
this last comment perplexes me. it has NEVER even crossed my mind to go to some blog somewhere on the net populated by folks with political philosophies different than mine and post “trolling”-style comments. what is it about this person/people in huntsville, AL who like to come over here and leave comments intended to start flame wars? surely they’re not under the impression that such an approach will change minds…?
billy the kid: there are other blogs on the web that express views that are different than the ones expressed on catoptric. catoptric’s purpose is not to provide a democratic forum to discuss political issues. if you don’t like what we’re saying here, then don’t visit the site.
thanks!
and vote kerry!
i tend to plug my blog when i feel like i’ve already said what i wanted to say and don’t wanna re-type it again!
some of you know this…but my job a year ago was to fight voter suppression and scare tactics. i get pretty angry about that stuff. i have put together a collection of what these people are doing out there.
