justice graves wins!

faked by Wednesday, November 17th, 2004

In a run-off where in many places it was the only race on the ballot, the Mississippi Supreme Court’s lone African-American, Justice James E. Graves, Jr., defeated his Republican-endorsed opponent—in a majority white district—by over 20,000 votes, gaining 57% of the total vote. That’s just amazing.

The conservative Magnolia Report calls it “making history.”

The AP says Justice Graves “easily” recaptured his seat.

And while Justice Graves was educating students on a Schoolhouse Tour of the district in the eve of an election, the Republicans were parroting national talking points about gay marriage.

You can view the election night coverage here.

A lengthy interview with the justice where he discusses judicial philosophy is here.

Many thanks to all my friends who helped make this happen.

  1. You were my first thought when I saw today’s headline. Congratulations, gorjus, and thanks for making this happen.

Congrats, gorjus! A much-needed bright spot in an otherwise dark campaign season.

  3. Good news for Mississipians. GREAT news for Cosby fans! Oh, and someone here keeps his jobby job.

My daughter, whose spirits were dashed first by the Cardinals loss in the Series then by that awful election 2 weeks ago, screamed and jumped for joy this morning when we told her Justice Graves won. It really made my day.

At least we got that. And Obama. And that Convention Ctr. deal.

    yeah!

gorjus, i got really scared when i went to vote at my voting station (in the heart of jacktown), and i was only number 84 at 5 pm. my heart feels light just knowing that some jerk who campaigned like he would actually have something to say about gay marriage one way or the other isn’t going to be weilding the gavel.

thanks for all your hard work!

  6. Sally says:
