vas ist die freundin??

faked by Thursday, January 29th, 2004

Where the heck is everybody? Kicker, no post all week! Besides Youknowverylittlegate, I guess not much is going on.

I have serious doubts whether Radiohead is worth a damn or not; the last time I really liked them was The Bends, now almost a decade old (don’t speak to me about intellectual challenge; if I want that, I’ll read Derrida).

Yet Thom Yorke has an interesting face, not unlike an absinthe-ruined nineteenth-century poet.

you’re crazy. The bends was kindergarten pop compared to what they’re doing now. Every rekkid is better than the last. Screw the intellectual challenge, just put on your robe, grab a 12 pack and put in “Hail to the Thief”

I’m with gorjus, ‘The Bends’ was the high water mark for RH.

  3. Hi gorjus! This is the week students started submitting assignments, so that’s where I’ve been: wielding the red pen. (Yeah, I know, everybody—it’s a pillar of our fine English-dept-TA training that we should grade in blue or green or comfy purple, but I’ve always gotten just as many complaints by using the tamer colors as I did with blood red. Besides, I just really like the red pen. It looks cool on the page.)

As for Radiohead, I like Pablo Honey OK, really like Kid A and Hail to the Thief, but don’t care for Amnesiac (except Knives Out, the lone “pop” cut). The Bends, however, is one of the finest, most perfect recordings ever. The guitar playing on Bends is particularly super, pretty basic in a lot of ways but so inspired and well wrought and kickass. OK Computer is also amazing but not, I think, as good as Bends.

Gorjus, here comes an actual post!

If you want an intellectual challenge, you should try to phonetically transcribe the speech of the Doag Loaver. She just said that she lost six pay-oonds.

i’ve been grading in orange for the last couple of years. i don’t their psyches are too delicate to handle some serious color on their papers. bah!

hey, that reminds me—whatever happened to Dr Dazey?

  6. Dr. Dazey died back in late 1998, I think? She got ill and had a leg amputated at some point, if I’m not mistaken, and she just went downhill from there. I’m not sure she ever really recovered from her husband’s death just a short while earlier.

that’s too bad. she was a tough old bird. i liked that lady. she told it like it was.

In honor of gorjus, I am listening to “the bends” over and over today. It’s good and I’ve always loved it. Radiohead is definitely worth a damn….....still….

You didn’t like OK Computer? Listen, the Bends is fantastic, I’ll give you that. But it’s also a genre piece. OK Computer (my fave) came out and transcended what all of the fucking Menswe@rs et al. of the day were doing. And intellectual challenge is music is important. Without Stockhausen, Brotzmann, or Branca we don’t get Sonic Youth and that means no Pavement. And trust me…Hail to the Thief is probably WAY more rewarding than reading some Derrida horseshit.
