a new day in mississippi?

faked by Wednesday, August 6th, 2003

i’m a fan of the drudgereport. i just am—i think it’s a great collection of links and junk that often exposes the hypocrisy of the right, no matter drudge’s personal leanings. and its influence is undeniable.

so when barbara blackmon won our democratic nomination for lt. gov. last nite—i wrote ol’ matt a letter.

twenty years ago i was at a birthday party at a friend’s house. she had a trampoline, and i was totally excited. my family didn’t have one, and i couldn’t wait to bounce around on it. right after we ate a bit of cake i wanted to go outside.

“forget that,” she smirked. “we’re going to watch videos on mtv.”

videos!! aw-RIGHT! because in 1983 i knew four things for sure: one, my family didn’t have cable; two, i wasn’t allowed to watch vidoes or even say the word “mtv;” and third, all i wanted to do was watch videos on mtv. the fourth? that the most important things in the world were star wars and comic books.

why? because according to slyck.com, that’s the song—by busta rhymes—that’s most likely to get you popped if the riaa is hitting you with a lawsuit for file-sharing (named in twelve separate suits).

other big no-no’s are avril lavigne’s “losing grip” (8); incubus “nice to know you” (6); and musiq “half crazy” (6). why do i feel so old? because i don’t know a lick of any of those four songs.

but i do know wham! “careless whisper” (1)!!

i missed it. i missed the prom. i hate it, but the truth: i had to work too damn much. that, and the wiring in my car is still a melty wreck. despite missing out on the party of the year, a lot of great things happened. i just can’t tell you about them yet.

the hag strikes back!

i knew there was a reason i liked merle haggard. not just for all the good tunes he’s made over the decades—but for his new song about the war and defending the dixie chicks! weoow!

the girl can’t dance.

i’m sitting on the curb when jp! picks me up after work. “let’s go get boozed up!!” he shouts over let it bleed, but i quickly demur, asking if we can go get some comics instead.

so we do! and man, i got some rad ‘mix, all marvel two-in-ones!! i have a fondness for the thing that i never really talk about. i would never say he’s my favorite character, but i have dozens of comics with him in it. but MTIOs are fun because of their late seventies and early eighties who gives a damn—while it wasn’t a second-tier comic in sales (well, always), they just seemed to barely try sometimes.

even the notoriously conservative clarion-ledger of jackson, mississippi is busting bush’s chops. in an editorial from today:

More troubling [than the uranium claim], though, are the other “facts” cited by Bush in that speech urging invasion of Iraq: up to 25,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, 500 tons of sarin, mustard gas and VX nerve agent and more than 30,000 munitions capable of delivering chemical weapons.
